SRINAGAR: BJP general secretary Ram Madhav on Thursday arrived in the summer capital to assess the political situation in view of mainstream parties pressing for restoration of Article 370 and statehood in J&K.
This visit of Mr Madhav, who is the point man for the saffron party in J&K, holds significance as it comes at a time when activities by other political parties, including National Conference (NC) and Congress, have started for the first time after August 5, 2019.
The visit also comes at a time when several BJP leaders have been targeted by militants.
Sources said that the BJP general secretary arrived here on Thursday afternoon. “From the airport, Mr Madhav went to circuit house in the city where he met several party leaders,” they said.
They said Mr Madhav is expected to chair a meeting of state BJP leaders to assess to political situation in J&K, where National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Conference, Congress, Awami National Conference (ANC) and the CPI (M) earlier this week reiterated their commitment to ‘Gupkar Declaration’ and announced a joint political battle for the restoration of Article 370 and Article 35A and its statehood.
BJP has termed the Gupkar Declaration ‘anti-national, pro-secessionist, misleading and deceptive’. The Gupkar Declaration was signed by leaders of six political parties on August 4 last year, a day before Article 370 was revoked by Parliament and the erstwhile state was divided into two Union Territories.
“Kashmir BJP unit will also raise the issue of security of BJP leaders and workers, who are being targeted by militants,” they added.
In the last about two months, five BJP leaders were killed by militants in different parts of Kashmir. (AGENCIES)
