NEW DELHI: The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was passed in the Lok Sabha with voice vote on Tuesday with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari assuring the Members that the Bill does not take away powers of state governments and it is optional.
Replying to debate on The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019, Mr Gadkari said the number of accidents will be definitely reduced after this Bill gets passed and is implemented.
The Minister assured the Members there is no intention of the Centre to interfere in the rights of states and they can continue to run road transport.
He said the Bill was prepared jointly after transport ministers of as many as 18 states studied it.
The Minister praised the Tamil Nadu government for reducing the number of accidental deaths in the state.
Speaking about National Transport Policy, Mr Gadkari said the policy consists of national mobility
and inter-state mobility.
He said National Transport Policy will be made after consultation of all stakeholders.
