JAMMU, Feb 8: Minister for Higher Education Mohammad Akbar Lone called for creation of centres of specialized knowledge and excellence during expansion of Higher Education sector in the State so as to ensure qualitative employment of the students coming out of new campuses not only to give local employment but be equally qualified for employment internationally.
Chairing a high level meeting, the Minister reviewed the proposal of Kashmir University for the new university campuses in Ladakh, Kargil and Kupwara districts and after a thorough discussion on the strength of the respective geographical areas and the requirement for next 20 years, Mr. Lone directed that instead of frittering away limited resources in common streams which are otherwise available in existing and new colleges being established in the concerned regions, we should have focused attention in specific sectors.
It was decided in the meeting that new campuses of Kashmir University should focus on Tourism, Earth Sciences and Buddhist Studies in Leh, Persian, Botany and IT with Tourism in Kargil and Physics, Energy Studies and Nano Technology in Kupwara.
Threadbare discussion was also held on the requirement of the University to be met by the State Government for posts created so far and assured the University that if they continue on the path of qualitative improvement and creation of centres of excellence comparable with international standards, the flow of funds commensurate with the requirements will be ensured.
The Minister emphasized that University should come out with a road map to make the new campuses self sufficient by the end of Five Year Plan period.
The meeting was attended by the Financial Commissioner, Finance Mohammad Iqbal Khandey, B. K. Aggarwal Principal Secretary, Higher Education, Vice Chancellor University of Kashmir Prof. Talat Ahmad, Director Planning Malik, Special Secretary, Higher Education Himat Sharma, Register University of Kashmir, Zaffar Ahmad Reshi and other concerned officers.
