Lone asks budding professionals to strive for achieving big

JAMMU, Sept 15: The Government College of Engineering and Technology (GCET), Jammu celebrated 46th Engineers’ Day today at its campus Chak Bhalwal, Jammu to commemorate   legendary Engineer, Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
The two-day event was inaugurated by Minister for Higher Education, Mohammad Akbar Lone who was the chief guest on the occasion. Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, Prof. M. P. S. Ishar and Divisional Commissioner, Jammu Shantmanu were guests of honour.
The celebrations aimed at to provide a common platform for exchange of innovative ideas between the academicians, engineering students and the industries.
The students of various engineering colleges from North India are displaying their projects and innovative ideas in the two days exhibition at GCET Campus, Jammu.
Various prestigious technical institutes like MNIT Jaipur, NIT Jalandhar, NIT Kurukshetra, GNDU Amritsar, Kashmir University, SSM College Srinagar, BGSBU Rajouri, MIET Jammu are participating in this event. The students also presented technical papers on the theme “Convergent Technologies for inclusive growth and sustainable development, besides various innovative project models were displayed in the exhibition. The reputed industries like NHPC, NTPC, Power Grid, SADE Chandigarh, NIELIT, IRCON, Konkan Railways, Chenab Valley Power Projects, BSNL and J&K Bank are also displaying their exhibits at the event so that the student community is benefitted from the innovative ideas/technology promoted by them in the field of technology.
Speaking on the occasion, Mohammad Akbar Lone highlighted   the services of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya to national development and to the cause of engineering in India. He appreciated the displays put up by various companies as well as the engineering students.
He called upon the students to follow the path of great professionals like Sir Visvesvaraya and strive for achieving big in their professionals pursuits. He said simultaneously the Engineering Institutes of the state should also provide quality education to the students. He assured that his government led by Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah was committed to provide all the facilities required for such purposes.
On the occasion, eminent personalities like Er. Shantmanu, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Er. L. Prakash, Chief Engineer (Projects), Konkan Railways, P. K. Nanda, Consultant GVR Infra Projects, Er. Arvind Dixit, CEO Advance Technology, Er. P. B. Jain from NHPC shared their valuable ideas and experiences with the engineering fraternity.
Principal GCET, Dr. Sameru Sharma highlighted the aim of organizing the mega event which is the first of its kind in the college. This event will serve as a platform for industry academia interaction and will ultimately allow the budding engineers the much needed exposure in the field of engineering who are the key players in deciding the future technologies.
As a step towards this directed i.e. to promote research and development activities by the students and faculty, a research cell is being set up in the college shortly on the directions of the Minister. The R&D cell would enable students and faculty keep abreast with the latest technological developments and come out with innovative projects for the benefits of society and at the same time to improvement in a academic progress.
Meanwhile, a meeting of J&K Society of Technocrats was held under the chairmanship of Er Jatinder Bakshi to celebrate Engineer’s day and to remember the  great doyen of Indian Engineering Society Sir M Visvesvaraya. The Secy General of the society  I C Jandial threw light on the life history of Sir M Visvesvaraya and his achievements not only in the engineering field.
S P Verma and Hari Singh the senior members of the society also spoke on the occasion. Among others, CM Seth, a senior member of society was also present.
