UDHAMPUR, Oct 2: After a female pedestrian was knocked to death by an over speeding truck near Manwal in tehsil Majalta, locals staged a strong protest and blocked the road for several hours.
The deceased, identified as Rekha Devi (50), wife of Khem Raj of Manwal was hit by a truck bearing registration number HP12M-8585 when she was walking on the roadside. Some locals and Police immediately rushed the victim to District Hospital Udhampur where she succumbed to her injuries.
Following the accident, local shopkeepers held a strong protest demonstration against the Traffic Department and district administration Udhampur. They staged a dharna on the road and blocked the vehicular movement.
They alleged that movement of heavy vehicles in the area during daytime was causing frequent accidents. They demanded that movement of heavy vehicles should be allowed only during night hours.
Later, SHO Majalta Virendra Gupta reached the spot and pacified the protesters by assuring that the higher authorities would be apprised of their demand.
