SRINAGAR, Feb 4:Police and Army had to call off the cordon and search operation in South Kashmir’s Shopian district today and resorted to aerial firing after people protested against detaining of youth by police during the operation.
Reports said that 62 Rashtriya Rifles of the Army and Police cordoned off village Harman in Shopian last night and early in the morning started searches. The operation was launched after a tip off to the security forces about presence of a group of militants inside the village.
Police detained three youth including Arshad Ahmad Wagay son of Mohammad Ahsan Wagay, a local barber, for questioning about the presence of militants inside the village. This irked the locals as they alleged that Wagay was beaten up by the police.
The locals protested against the detention and beating of Wagay. They hurled Kangris (Fire pots) at police and security forces had to call off the search operation.
Police and Army also resorted to aerial firing to quell the protests.
