Living a sincere life

Mehak Gupta Grover
Veracity, honesty, sincerity, Integrity, Morality , genuineness  – such simple words have been taught to us since our childhood.  Still somewhere or the other we love to lie –  intentionally or unintentionally. Specially when the question of ‘ SUCCESS ‘ arises, everyone leaves honesty aside. But practically honesty is the cornerstone of all success, without which confidence and ability to perform shall cease to exist.
Lying – like it or not – is a part of everyday life. Most of us will bend the truth every now and then, with even the most honest person telling the occasional ‘ white lie ‘. Most basic lies happen in our day – today lives. Parents lie that their children are ill to get leave or employees bring in fake resume and lie about their work experience. People lie about their salaries and qualifications when getting married.  It seems that lies pervade our society. How do politicians who lie, commit crimes against humanity, get re-elected? And I fail to understand what do people get out of it? Everywhere in today’s society, we see dishonest people yet they seem to thrive. Is this fair? Are we a civilised society?
The success principle of honesty is a lost art. To be honest is a part of success because it shows that a person can be trusted. It shows that we honour those with whom we associate; we respect them. Regardless of how well we do what we do, if our words cannot be trusted, people will loose faith in us. Book of proverbs point out that our Character is more valuable than silver or gold!
In this competitive world, compassion and honesty are things which are very difficult to practice in life. But everyone forgets that everytime we are honest and conduct ourselves with honesty, a success force will drive us towards greater success. And everytime we lie, there are strong forces pushing us towards failure.  There is one value to live by –
“Success will come and go, but integrity is forever”.
Integrity means doing the right thing at all times and in all circumstances,  whether anyone is watching or not. Building a reputation of integrity takes years, but it takes only a second to loose. A castle can be build with anything again and again but reputation once lost cannot be made again easily.
How often have we heard the proverb- ‘ Fake it till you make it’? Sometimes it holds good. Faking for a positive thought which does not harm anyone, especially one’s innerself can be helpful. In words of Bryant –
‘Putting on a happy face – even if we don’t feel like – actually induces greater happiness. So be exuberant. Don’t just eat the best peach of the season – luxuriate in every lip- smacking mouthful. Laugh aloud at the movies. Smile at yourself in the mirror’.
Many a time  we meet people- when asked- how are you?,they bare their teeth in a fake smile and say- ‘ I am fine’! But this formula actually works! Make your principles so honest that you find no reason to be upset, you get no moment to feel ashamed of in your entire lifetime.
It’s very rightly said- ” Nothing can bring you peace but yourself”.
What a human being needs is Clarity and not confidence. Clarity supersedes confidence. If one’s vision is clear, one can walk easily through a crowd of people. But if one’s vision is not clear and has confidence,  one will walkover everybody.
Goodness is about character, integrity,  honesty, kindness, genorsity. More than anything else, it is about how we trust other people.
A single lie destroys the whole reputation of integrity!
