Light snow in parts of Kashmir, temps plummet

SRINAGAR, Jan 8: After respite from the cold wave conditions due to last week’s snowfall, Kashmir valley was today again in the grip of cold wave as temperatures dropped several notches below freezing point but the weatherman has forecast fresh rain and snowfall in the State from Thursday.
Kashmir was today again in the grip of cold wave with temperatures plummeting again.. The north and Central Kashmir this morning had light snowfall this morning. The snowfall started at around 7: 30 a.m. and lasted for about an hour.
The light snowfall led to slippery road conditions and traffic on the roads was skeletal with vehicles plying at snail’s pace to avoid accidents. However, by 10:30 a.m. the roads were clear for traffic.
A Meteorological Department Official said that weather condition would remain the same during the next 48 hours.
However, the weatherman has forecast rains and snowfall in Kashmir from Thursday with more precipitation on Friday and Saturday. “The snowfall could lead to disruption in Air and surface traffic”, the official said.
The minimum temperatures in Kashmir mostly remained subzero today and maximum mostly below normal.
Srinagar recorded minimum of minus 2.0 degrees Celsius with maximum temperature at 4.5 degrees Celsius.
Qazigund recorded minimum of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius with maximum temperature at 6.9 degrees Celsius.
Pahalgam recorded minimum of minus 4.9 degrees with maximum temperature at 1.8 degrees Celsius.
Gulmarg recorded minimum of minus 9.0 degrees with maximum temperature at minus 2.6 degrees Celsius.
Leh town recorded minimum of minus 8.9 degrees Celsius and maximum of 1.3 degrees Celsius.
Kargil recorded minimum of minus 15.0 degrees and maximum of minus 5.3 degrees Celsius.
Jammu city recorded 7.8 degrees Celsius, Katra 7.4 degrees Celsius, Batote minus 0.5 degrees Celsius, Bannihal 1.2 degrees Celsius and Bhaderwah minus 0.7 degrees Celsius as the night’s lowest temperatures. The day temperatures at these places settled at maximum of 17.1 degrees Celsius, 15.0 degrees Celsius, 10.4 degrees Celsius, 14.5 degrees Celsius and 9.7 degrees Celsius respectively.
