Srinagar, Nov 19: After 133 days, normal life returned to Kashmir today and markets and schools opened for the first time across Valley with public transport hitting the roads.
The life returned to normalcy for the first time since July 8 after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.
The shops, commercial establishments, petrol pumps and educational institutions opened in Srinagar and in other major towns and villages of the Valley. Authorities had also removed deployments of security forces from all the areas of the Valley including in Srinagar’s downtown.
People in large numbers thronged the markets and there were traffic jams on all major city roads throughout the day. However, traffic police was seen managing the traffic.
The passenger vehicles were seen plying across Kashmir. Majority of the schools and colleges in Srinagar and elsewhere were open since morning and at many places the students in their uniforms were seen rushing towards their schools. The day here passed off peacefully and there was no untoward incident in any area.
Since early morning children were seen walking towards their schools, despite prevailing cold weather conditions.  However, the main private schools in Srinagar remained closed as students didn’t report today.
Sources said that at Achhabal area of Anantnag, a group of youth forced shutdown. They asked the shopkeepers to shut down their shops.
In the meantime, Kashmir University today chalked out strategy to conduct undergraduate examinations which, the spokesman said, will commence by the end of November.
A meeting which was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi decided to conduct examination in Kashmir by end of this month.
He further said that the Bi-Annual Examinations of 1st Year/2nd Year in Kashmir valley shall commence from 2nd week of December.
The 3rd Year Annual Examination (of both Regular/ Backlog Candidates) in Kashmir valley will be conducted after December. The spokesman said that it was decided to allow the students to avail the time till December-end for preparation and using e-content already uploaded on the University website (in UG E-Tutorial section/on some city college web portals).
The spokesman further said that the Examination of 2nd Semester (Batch-2015) shall be held on priority, preferably from mid-December-2016 as the syllabus of courses has already been completed.
Consequently, the third semester examination of this batch shall be held in early March 2017 for smooth start of next academic session.
The spokesman said that the examination of 1st semester (2016) shall commence from mid-January 2017 while 2nd semester examination of this batch shall be held from mid-March in view of already-uploaded e-content material.
