SRINAGAR, May 21: Life was partially affected due to strike,called by moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) on the death anniversaries of Mirwaiz Moulvi Mohammad Farooq and Khawaja Abdul Gani Lone.
Mirwaiz Farooq was killed by unidentified gunmen in his Nigeen house on this day in 1990 while Lone,founder of Peoples Conference (PC), a constituent of Hurriyat, was killed during a rally at Eidgah on May 21,2002.
Besides calling for a general strike today, the HC had called for Eidgah challo.
Shops and business establishments remained closed in the busy centres of civil lines, including Hari Singh High Street (HSHS), Budshah Chowk, Regal Chowk, historic Lal Chowk, nerve centre of the city, Gaw Kadal, Moulana Azad Road and Residency road besides general bus stand Batmaloo.
However, in the outskirts and uptown, majority shops were open.
Majority public transport remained off the roads. However, several vehicles, though with less passengers, were seen plying on different uptown and civil line routes.
Tata Sumos and three wheelers, charging more from passengers, were also plying on most routes.
Roadside vendors could also be seen on both sides of the roads at several places in the city,taking the advantage of less transport and pedestrain movement.
The educational institutions,including those run by government, wore a deserted look.The management of majority private institutions had announced a holiday today, fearing trouble.
Work in government offices and banks was also affected.
Reports of very less response to strike call were also received from other parts of the valley. (UNI)
