Life paralysed for 95th day, 66 arrested

SRINAGAR, Oct 11: Sixty six persons were arrested on charges of stone pelting and creating trouble in Kashmir while shutdown and restrictions paralysed life in Valley for 95th consecutive day today.
Police said that action against the trouble mongers and miscreants initiated by police is on, and in last 24 hours 66 persons involved in crimes of creating hurdles in movement of people, stone pelting and creating trouble for the common people have been arrested across Kashmir.
Restrictions were imposed in parts of Srinagar and police and para-military security forces were deployed in strength to prevent violence. Shops, business establishments were closed and public transport was off the roads. However, some private vehicles were plying.
A police spokesman said that following improvement in situation curfew was lifted from six police stations of South and East Srinagar. However, restrictions continued in some police station areas  of the Old City. There was no curfew anywhere across the Valley.
“The situation remained by and large peaceful although stray incidents of stone pelting were reported”, police said.
Police said that during the day increased flow of traffic and movement of people continued in most areas of Srinagar and other parts of Valley.
Vendors and some shopkeepers were seen doing their usual business in the markets and towns of the Valley.
Over a dozen of Shiites were injured today after security forces tried to foil the Muharram procession in Baba Demb area of Old City.
Shiites took out procession from Shamaswari Imam Baada Kadal and were on way to Shalteng area of Habba Kadal. Security forces fired teargas to disperse the mourners, resulting in injuries to several of them.
A large number of mourners succeeded in giving slip to police and reaching at Shalteng Habba Kadal.
Security forces blocked all the roads leading towards Gow Kadal where another Muharram procession was proposed to be held in afternoon. Large contingent of security forces were deployed on roads. The movement of pedestrians was restricted. They had also erected concertina wires on roads to foil the proposed Muharram procession in Gow Kadal area. As soon as the mourners tried to came out, security forces fired teargas to disperse them during which scores of mourners’ were injured.
