JAMMU, June 8: BJP spokesperson and convenor, International Affairs, Gaurav Gupta today said that the Drug-Free J&K campaign led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has emerged as one of the most impactful social initiatives in the Union Territory, transforming the fight against drug abuse into a broad-based public movement.
Referring to the LG’s padyatra across all 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir, Gupta said the campaign has mobilized students, parents, civil society organizations, religious leaders, sportspersons and local communities against the growing menace of drugs.
He said the initiative has sent a strong message to drug peddlers and narcotics syndicates that the administration is committed to dismantling the entire ecosystem of drug trafficking. According to Gupta, the campaign has gone beyond awareness generation and focused on disrupting supply chains, financial networks and the social acceptance of narcotics.
Highlighting the achievements of the 100-day mission launched on April 11, Gupta said more than 1,000 FIRs have been registered, over 1,100 drug smugglers arrested, more than 100 properties attached and hundreds of driving licenses cancelled. He described these measures as evidence of the administration’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug-related crimes.
Gupta noted that drug abuse had become a serious challenge affecting thousands of families across J&K. However, sustained action by the administration has shifted the sense of fear from ordinary citizens to drug traffickers and their handlers.
He also emphasized the LG’s consistent focus on the nexus between narcotics trafficking and terrorism. By targeting drug syndicates, he said, the administration is not only safeguarding the youth but also strengthening the security framework of the UT.
The BJP leader said the district-level padyatras have significantly enhanced awareness among young people about the harmful effects of substance abuse and encouraged collective participation in the anti-drug drive.
Calling for continued public support, Gupta urged citizens, particularly the youth, to remain vigilant and actively contribute towards building a drug-free society. He asserted that the momentum generated by the Drug-Free J&K Mission must continue until the menace is completely eradicated from J&K.
