LeT militant killed in Handwara, 2 flee

SRINAGAR, July 19: A Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant was killed in a brief gunfight at Batpora area of Magam in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district today.
A joint operation was launched by Army’s 47 RR and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police at Batpora area close to the forests following specific inputs about the presence of at least three militants of LeT hiding in the area.
The security forces conducted searches of the area and a hiding militant fired upon the search party. Security forces retaliated and in the encounter, the militant was killed. The militant, according to sources fled in an injured condition. His associate was killed during a gunfight on the night of June 9 in the area.

Security forces received incriminating materials from the slain militant and on the basis of which, they said, that he was affiliated to LeT. Arms and ammunition were also recovered from the encounter site.
The operation is going on against two members of the group who are believed to be hiding in the forest area. More troops have been rushed to the area for the operation.  These militants fled to the forests after security forces launched operation against them and one of their associates was killed.
A police spokesman said here that pursuing credible leads regarding the presence of militants in Batapora village of Magam area in district Handwara, a joint patrol of the security forces today in the afternoon hours launched searches in the area.
“During the searches, a hiding terrorist fired on the search party. The fire was retaliated and in the ensuing encounter, the terrorist was successfully eliminated by the joint patrol. No collateral damage was witnessed during the encounter”, the spokesman said.
“On the basis of the incriminating materials recovered, the killed terrorist is learnt  to be a foreigner (Pakistani national) and was affiliated to the proscribed terror outfit LeT. Some arms and ammunition were also recovered from the encounter site. Police has registered a case and investigation has been initiated in the instant matter”, the spokesman added.
In the meantime, police recovered rusted grenade from Pulwama today and it was taken to the police Lines where the Bomb Disposal Squad detonated it.
