Sir,
It seems that we did not learn any lesson from Khaire landslide on National Highway near Udhampur. This new landslide gave alarming signals about two years ago when it took under it several kilometers area from top of hill to ground zero near Tawi. The work of four laning of the road has started, but it seems that the physical history and on the ground situation of the road has not been taken into active consideration. The road which has living or dead landslide after every three or four kilometers, the road which experiences rainfall continuously for ten to fifteen days on some occasions and finally the road which shakes when a thirty tyre truck passes on it. The people of Chenani, and erstwhile Doda District especially the students and the patients have suffered badly. Now when the development of this road was started it was hoped that some better alignment will be given to this road and many options were thrown into public discussion. Nothing happened like that. The alignment is the same, only the loose side towards hill is being cut to make one extra tube of the road. The engineers are wise enough, but in the National interest we should see the climatic condition. Presently, the retaining walls and the protection walls are being constructed with stones and cement and as per past exprience we have seen that even during slight rain there comes sudden push from the hill to damage the road side walls. It is requested that hillside walls should be constructed with cement, sand and saria only and no stone should be used. Moreover, still there is time to consider for long flyovers and road alignment should also be changed on some points to make it more solid. Hope National Highway Authority, will consider there suggestions, if possible.
Yours etc…
