Leh highway remains closed, Srinagar-Jammu & Mughal road through for traffic

SRINAGAR:The national highway connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir remained closed for the second day today while the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu and historic Mughal road are through for traffic despite rain.
A traffic police official told UNI here that the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway remained closed for the second day today.
However, he said vehicles, stranded on either side of the Zojila pass for the past two days, were allowed to allowed move towards their respective destinations in the afternoon yesterday. But, the road has not been fully restored and no fresh traffic was allowed on the highway today also he said.
He said traffic on the highway was suspended yesterday to allow Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to remove the landslide and repair the damaged portion of the road at Gund on Srinagar-Baltal base camp of holy Amarnath cave shrine.
The road was damaged due to cloud burst, triggering landslides at Kullan and other areas in Gund tehsil on the highway on July 16 evening, affecting Amarnath pilgrims also, the official said.
However, traffic was partially resumed for one-way on July 19 to allow stranded vehicles to move towards their respective destinations after BRO and the Indian Army removed some landslides.
Traffic official said traffic will be resumed on the highway only after receiving green signal from the BRO and traffic police officials posted at different places on the highway, he added. However, the national highway linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country was through despite rain during the night. Light and heavy vehicles carrying Amarnath pilgrims will ply from both sides and other heavy vehicles will continue to ply on one-side only on the highway as road at several places was still very narrow where only one vehicle could pass easily, he said.
The historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region was through for both ways, he added. (AGENCIES)
