NEW DELHI:  The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) today said the Enforcement Directorate had recommended to it to initiate proceedings for deportation of liquor baron Vijay Mallya and it was consulting legal experts to start proceedings for deportation.

The Ministry had only last week suspended the diplomatic passport of the business tycoon, currently in the UK, after the ED conveyed to it that Mr Mallya was not cooperating in investigations.

The Ministry had given a week’s time to Mr Mallya to reply to its notice of suspension.

A Mumbai court had already issued non-bailable warrant against the liquor baron wanted in several cases of bank loan default.

A group of 18 banks, most of which are in the  public sector, have rejected Mr Mallya’s offer to pay back the loans in installments. They want him to come back and negotiate in person.(Agencies)
