LEH, Apr 3: The Women Wing of Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) held a meeting under the chairmanship of its president Tsewang Dolma, in which different women groups from Changthang, Nubra, Sham, Zanskar and Leh took part.
The agenda of the meeting was to discuss on the menace of sale and consumption of alcohol and its harmful effects on the individual, family and the society as a whole.
Each member put forth their observations, experience, thoughts and suggestions. The general observation was that alcohol is the root cause of all misfortunes, ranging from domestic violence, sexual offence and assault with grievous bodily harm, robbery, murder, family disputes, marriage break ups, displaced families and children and so on.
From the health and scientific perspective, alcohol has led to many deaths in this district due to liver cirrhosis, cancer, heart diseases etc. Alcohol abuse has been the greatest menace to the society of Ladakh, ranging from a dwindling family income, because of an alcoholic husband, the single most important factor responsible for morbidities, mortality, violence, crime and accidents with major consequences for the individual, family and the community with immense negative impact on the economy and children’s education.
In solidarity with the action group, the members felt that as responsible citizens, women groups and the society as a whole, must take a bold step and not let this alcohol abuse destroy individuals, families and the community.
The members unanimously agreed and passed a resolution to approach the Chief Minister (CM) in order to ban alcohol sales and declare the State as ‘Dry State’ like Bihar and Gujarat.
Later, addressing a press conference, LBA Present Tsewang Dolma flanked by Secretary Dolma Tsering and Vice President Tsewang Dolma said that Healthy Ladakh movement got positive response from everywhere to curb the menace of alcohol but more is to be done. LBA President sought support from all the stakeholders. She added that if Bihar can put complete ban on sale of liquor why not Leh District.
Physician specialist Dr Tashi Thinles also spoke on the bad affects of alcohol.
