JAMMU, Apr 26: Continuing agitation for the 6th consecutive day today, J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu held protest demonstrations against the senior police officials for protecting the cops responsible for atrocities on a lawyer.
In the morning, large number of lawyers gathered in the court complex and held massive protest demonstration against the senior police officers for protecting those cops, who beat up Advocate Harshvardhan Gupta and later kept him in the illegal custody.
Later, the lawyers reached Janipur road and staged dharna for nearly one hour. Due to the lawyers’ protest, vehicular traffic remained disrupted on the busy road for quite long time.
In order to further intensify the ongoing agitation, the members of the core committee and enforcement committee conducted a meeting and it was unanimously resolved to seek the support of more political parties, organizations, civil society, public at large, students and all those who are aggrieved of such repeated illegal action of the police personnel and those shielding them.
They said that such illegal actions of the police need to be condemned by one and all and immediate steps need to be taken by the authorities to restore the shattered confidence of the advocates in particular and public at large in general.
Later, a delegation led by President, JKHCBA M K Bhardwaj met the Divisional Commissioner on the latter’s invitation and apprised him of the whole incident.
The delegation reiterated its demand for suspension of the erring police officials immediately so that an independent, impartial and fair inquiry in the matter can be conducted at the earliest, to restore the public confidence.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Kissan Sangh and Nationalist Congress Party extended support to the ongoing strike of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu.
