LAWWDA irks HC

A culture of passing on the buck has developed in State administration in which many serious matters prone to political interference are passed on to the court to decide. This is not a healthy trend and the Judiciary should not be made to perform the activity which normally the Executive should be interested in doing. All the three organs of the State are expected to work independently though of course, they work in coordination.
Lakes and Water Ways Development Authority (LAWWDA) has come under the scanner from the very beginning. Inquiries have been made and allegations of corruption and financial irregularities have been brought to the High Court. Many skeletons tumbled out of its cupboard. LAWWDA has won the notoriety of corruption on a vast scale beside the ire of the society for not having been able to deliver the goods. Yet all this notwithstanding no allegedly corrupt functionary has been brought to book. Even some of them alleged to have greased their palms have retired and drawn their pensionery benefits without having to face any objection. This is unacceptable. The Court was surprised that the LAWWDA has not as yet removed all the house boats to Dole Demb as was instructed to be done in phased manner. The Court has said that the first phase required shifting of 76 house boats and even that has not been done and directed all concerned authorities to take up the issue expeditiously and seriously and provide status report in the matter.  The Court has unusually gone to the extent of threatening the party that if the removal of the houseboats does not take place the Court may be forced to use coercive methods. There is thinking in some circles that the house boat owners have garnered some sympathetic quarters among the Government agencies including the Tourism Department and it is on their behest that they show unwillingness to let their house boats be removed away to a specific place.
