Landslides disrupt traffic on Srinagar-Jammu highway

SRINAGAR : Traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained disrupted for more than 12 hours during to landslides and shooting stone in Banihal area last night.

Official sources said there was landslides and shooting stones at Batray Cheshma in Banihal area on the highway last night damaging a truck killing the driver and conductor.

Traffic from both sides was stopped due to which a large number of vehicles got stranded on the highway.

They said due to continued shooting stones from the top, operation to clear the landslides on the road was affected.

Sources said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, put into service men and sophisticated machines to clear the  landslides.

The stranded vehicles were allowed to move towards their respective destinations, they said.

Traffic was restored on the highway, they said adding that vehicles will ply from Jammu to Srinagar today.

Several thousand vehicles, including those carrying passengers and trucks loaded with essentials have left Jammu for Srinagar today.

However, no vehicle would be allowed from Srinagar, they  said. (AGENCIES)
