Land Bill panel term extended till end of session: Mahajan

NEW DELHI: Amid protest from the Opposition in the Lok Sabha,  Speaker Sumitra Mahajan today extended the time of  Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the Land Bill till the last day of the Winter session.

She said the the Committee’s report was to be submitted on the first day of the Winter session, which commenced on November 26, but since the Committee had not submitted the report on that day therefore  ” I extend the time to submit the report by the last day of the session.”

The Joint Parliamentary Committee is examining the Bill to find a solution to resolve the differences between Centre and the Opposition on the contentious clauses of the Land Bill.

The Congress Members stood on their seats as soon as the Speaker announced the extension of the term of the Committee.

Leader of Congress M Mallikarjun Kharge said, “The Prime Minister  had said on the Land Acquisition Bill that the government will not take any action and now they want to extend the time.”

On this, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said states have  suggested the Prime  Minister that if there was a problem in enacting Land Acquisition legislation by the Centre then it should  be left to the States.

“No final view has been taken on the Land Acquisition bill,” he said. (AGENCIES)
