JAMMU, Aug 5: The Election Department in the Union Territory of Ladakh today announced one-day polling on September 10 for 26-member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil.

The election schedule was released today by Administrative Secretary, Election Department of Ladakh Yetindra M Maralkar.
As per the schedule, one-day polling will be held for all 26 seats of LAHDC Kargil on September 10 from 8 AM to 4 PM while counting of votes will take place on September 14.
Process for filing nomination papers will start on August 16. Last date for making nominations is August 23.
The Election Department will scrutinise nomination papers on August 24 while the candidates can withdraw their nomination papers till August 26.
Entire election process will be completed before September 20.
Officials said the Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect following announcement of elections to the LAHDC Kargil.
“Violation of Code of Conduct will invite action under rules,” they added.
A 24×7 Control Room has been established in the office of the Deputy Commissioner Kargil for smooth conduct of elections.
Nodal Officers have been appointed for various purposes.
This will be fifth election to LAHDC Kargil which had come into effect in 2003.
The LAHDC Kargil has total strength of 30. While election is held for 26 seats, four Councillors are nominated by the Union Territory Administration of Ladakh with voting rights. Thus, a party has to win 16 seats to secure majority.
National Conference leader Feroz Khan remained as chairperson-cum-Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of LAHDC Kargil throughout the five-year term of the present Council.
The National Conference and Congress have already announced both pre-poll and post-poll alliance for the LAHDC Kargil elections. They will shortly hold discussions on seat sharing formula. Senior leaders of the two parties will first take call on how many seats the two parties would contest.
In 2018 election, National Conference had won 10 seats and Congress 8. PDP had garnered two seats and BJP one while there were five Independents. Initially NC and Congress shared power in the Council but later NC formed its own city Government with Independents. PDP Councillors had later switched over to BJP while four nominated Councillors were also its leaders which took party’s strength to seven.
The BJP, on the other, has decided to project Haji Anayat Ali, former Chairman of J&K Legislative Council and once a prominent PDP leader, as its candidate for the post of Chairman. Anayat had joined the BJP long back.
