JAMMU, Dec 26: The NGO ‘Viklang Chhatra Trust’ has written to the Lieutenant Governor of J&K, Girish Chandra Murmu about the problems being faced by the cataract patients as there is no specified operation theatre in Sub District Hospitals of Jammu province.
In a handout the Trust has mentioned that a large number of poor people are rendered blind due to non-removal of cataract on time.
“Only three such Operation Theatres (OTs)-one at GMC Jammu, another at Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar and the third one at SDH Akhnoor are functional here,” the handout further stated adding that the Akhnoor OT is catering to the needs of people from the entire Akhnoor Tehsil, areas of Sunderbani, Reasi, Rajouri and Poonch for the simple reasons that OTs at GMC & Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar are overcrowded with patients from Samba and Kathua, Udhampur, Reasi, Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar and many areas of district Jammu.
Moreover despite overload, OT at SDH Akhnoor is unable to successfully meet the requirement of ophthalmological nature of the people due to lack of infrastructure and modern machinery/technique.
The handout quoted Dr. Ghanshayam Singh Jamwal, the only Eye Specialist at SDH Akhnoor, to say due to non-availability of Phaco Machine, NCT (Non-Contact Tonometer) and Slit Lamp, the patients have to further suffer a lot.
The Trust claimed that even Eye Surgeons are not posted in various hospitals and at places where they are, they are unable to render service due to non availability of essential facilities.
The Trust has urged to the Lieutenant Governor to empower SDH Akhnoor and other hospitals with latest technology and OTs for catering to the needs of eye patients.
