JAMMU Jan 17: The Estimates Committee (EC) of Legislative Assembly today reviewed the functioning of Housing and Urban Development Department.
The Committee which met here today under the chairmanship of Hakim Muhammad Yasin held a threadbare discussion on the housing policy presently in vogue in the State.
Legislators Abdul Rehman Veeri, Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, Ch. Zulfikar Ali and Naresh Kumar Gupta also attended the meeting.
The Committee observed that the norms of Master Plans in Jammu, Srinagar and Katra needs to be implemented strictly as the violations hamper proper development. The Committee members asked the concerned departments to take action against the violators, particularly with regard to the violation of building plans and conversion of residential buildings into commercial centres.
The Chairman instructed the authorities of the HUDD to submit detailed list of illegal shopping malls and marriage halls along with their registration and fee structure for the scrutiny of the committee .
The Chairman enquired about the dog menace and the measures being taken by the Government functionaries to tackle this problem in the capital cities. “The dogs have become a great public nuisance in the capital cities and need to be dealt effectively” the Members of the Committee pointed out.
Listing the measures taken in this regard, the Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) said that the Government has taken several steps to control dog menace including most scientific method of sterilization of 91000 dogs in and around Srinagar city.
The Vice Chairman, Srinagar Development Authority (SDA) Farooq Renzushah, informed the meeting that a multi story parking is being constructed at old KMD Adda in Srinagar at an estimated cost of Rs 1.32 crore for which tenders have already been floated. He said that the old Government Garage near Press Colony was also being converted into parking lot, while Sheikh Bagh has already been converted in a major parking place.
The meeting was further informed that 3 places have been identified to be used for major parking places in the Jammu city. The meeting was informed that the Government is working on a plan to develop 2 multi- storey parking at the General Bus Stand, Jammu and Panjtirthi. In addition one more parking place is being developed at Purani Mandi for which Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared.
