SRINAGAR, June 1: The Vice Chancellor of Kashmir University, Prof Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi today said that KU was committed to promotion of local craftsmanship as part of its social responsibility and would take all required measures in this regard.
He said this while felicitating and distributing honorarium cheques among successful beneficiaries of six-month certificate course in Papier-mâché. The VC said that the varsity was committed to provide all logistic, infrastructural and professional support to budding artisans.
The skill development/certificate course in Papier-mâché was conducted by University’s Directorate of Lifelong Learning (DLL) in collaboration with the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL), New Delhi.
Prof Andrabi, while hailing the candidates who have successfully completed the course, said: “As far as arts and crafts are concerned, the machine-made products have become very common and ordinary throughout the world. High-end buyers are now looking for hand-made products which are unique and aesthetic. Therefore, I believe if we can market these products properly, it will fetch good dividends to these hard-working artisans.”

Earlier, Director DLL Prof GH Mir, gave details of the six-month course. “This is the second batch of 120 candidates who have successfully completed the course at three different training centres under the supervision of DLL, “ he said.
