The University of Kashmir is currently grappling with a severe shortage of non-teaching staff, as more than 500 positions have remained unfilled since 2016 due to a lack of recruitment efforts. This deficiency in staff is directly impeding the university’s ability to carry out its academic and administrative functions effectively. This issue is further exacerbated by the annual departure of 70-80 non-teaching staff members due to retirement, intensifying the staffing vacuum. Numerous University departments are particularly hard hit by this crisis. Key areas such as the administrative block, Alama Iqbal Library, and the research centre are also affected. With approximately 550 positions left vacant and an ever-increasing trend in this regard due to retirements, the situation is profoundly suboptimal. In practical terms, these positions have remained unfilled since 2016, and there is no discernible recruitment schedule on the horizon. The consequence of this is that the esteemed Kashmir University is operating under acute staff shortages. Virtually all departments are feeling the direct or indirect impact. The ripple effect is palpable in the day-to-day functioning of the university. Vital tasks are left in limbo for an indeterminate period, inevitably hampering the academic operations within the university campus.
The satellite campuses, which already operate with limited staff, bear the brunt of this situation. The fact that the University has been unable to conduct recruitment for the past seven years is an issue of utmost gravity. The persistence of this problem without corrective action calls for profound introspection. While the youth of Jammu and Kashmir are actively seeking employment opportunities, Kashmir University is grappling with 550 unfilled positions. Diligent efforts should be exerted to advertise these positions and initiate the recruitment process following established protocols. Irrespective of past circumstances, the University authorities must take proactive measures to rectify the situation and set in motion the recruitment process. The matter has garnered public attention and demands prompt action without further delay.
