Srinagar, June 23 : With an aim to give insights into the main responsibilities and tasks of leadership and management in higher education institutions, a week long training programme for the Principals of J&K Colleges began at Kashmir University today.
The programme with the theme ‘Planning and Management of Higher Education Institutions’ for College Principals of J&K state, is being organised by National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA) in collaboration with Academic Staff College, University of Kashmir.
Inaugurating the week long Programme Vice Chancellor Central University, Prof Abdul Wahid, who was the chief guest on the occasion spoke about essentials of strategic management of organisational development and change. He also elaborated on specific issues such as excellence and quality assurance, equity and relevance in higher education. Giving statistics VC CU said that a total of 135000 students are enrolled in our higher educational institutions in J&K state which still comprises of only 1% of our population.
Prof wahid said that we should allow private players in a stringently regulated fashion in spite of our bitter experiences with BEd colleges. Access, equity and relevance are three major issues confronting our higher education system, he said adding we need to enhance social relevance and job orientation of our courses. Soft skills like communication and IT skills besides managerial skills need to be fostered into our Higher education system, Prof Abdul Wahid suggested.
Prof Sudhanshu Bhushan, Head, Deptt of Higher and Professional Education, NUEPA said that Undergraduate education is the mainstay of higher education in India. He said that New philosophy of the education system developing in the country is that that faculty is the nerve centre whereas students are the heart of the education system. Terming Principals as academic leaders in many ways Prof Sudhanshu said our youth serve as an enriched human resource and employability of pass-outs is gaining tremendous importance.
Noted academician Prof. A G Madhosh in his keynote Address said Education is an instrument not an end in itself, it may show the path but it is not the destination per se. “Change does not wait for anyone, it sets in anyhow” said Prof Madhosh asseting that future of higher education lies in the private sector.
Prof. Farooq Fayaz, Director Academic Staff College was appreciative of Prof Sudhanshu Bhushan, head, Deptt of Higher and Professional Education NUEPA and all his senior faculty members for undertaking this important exercise aimed at honing the administrative and management skills of our academic administrators.
