Srinagar, Sept 2: Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, Prof Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi, today announced a slew of measures the University proposes to take to enhance transparency and accountability in academics and examinations.
Chairing a meeting of deans of various faculties and heads of departments, the Vice-Chancellor said the University would empower students to get their grievances redressed in case they feel their answer scripts haven’t been evaluated properly.
“The students would be in a position to instantly move the Chairman of the Departmental Committee with their grievances for a resolution within three days. And if a student is still not satisfied, he will be at liberty to register his grievance before the concerned Dean, and also the Dean Academic Affairs if needed,” he told the meeting. “The idea is to fully empower the student community and make them feel completely comfortable in the system.”
Prof Andrabi said the University also proposes to revisit the pattern of question papers at the undergraduate level and have it on 50:50 basis for descriptive and objective-type questions. “This would cut-short the evaluation process and consequently ensure early declaration of results,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor also talked about a proposal to start second shift in some PG programmes “where we don’t have any major logistic problems.”
The University, Prof Andrabi announced, also intends to establish its own Undergraduate College offering courses initially in sciences and later in arts and social sciences. “This would also closely help us evaluate the gaps, if any, in the system of academics at the UG and PG level and plug the same,” he said.
The University, he said, also contemplates to do away with private system of examination and confine itself to offering courses and examinations through regular and distance modes only, as per the standard practice.
Dean Academic Affairs, Prof M A Wani, Registrar Prof Musadiq Amin Sahaf, Dean Colleges Prof GM Shah, Controller of Examinations Prof AS Bhat and SS to Vice Chancellor, Dr M S Sumbil were also present on the occasion.
