NEW DELHI, Sep 20: With protesters demonstrating against an anti-Islam film attacking the highly-sensitive Diplomatic Enclave in Islamabad, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna today spoke to the Indian High Commissioner there to enquire about the safety and security of mission officials.
Krishna inquired about the safety and well-being of the mission officials and other Indian nationals from High Commissioner Sharat Sabharwal, Ministry of External Affairs sources said.
An initial demonstration of around 1,000 swelled to around 5,000 with the arrival of protesters carrying the flags of hardline Islamist groups Jamaat-ud-Dawa, Jamaat-e-Islami and Sipah-e-Sahaba—which is banned by Pakistan Government.
The Government called in the army to protect the enclave, home to most embassies, including the Indian, US, British and French missions, after protesters broke through a barrier of shipping containers set up by police to block a road leading to the area.
Officers fired tear gas and live rounds as the demonstrators tried to breach the security cardon. (AGENCIES)
