JAMMU, May 26: A successful knee replacement surgery was performed today on 72-year-old male patient at Government Medical College (GMC) Udhampur.
The patient, a native of Laden (Udhampur) was suffering from knee pain for last 15 years. He was a case of severe osteoarthritis of right knee. Knee replacement in private setup costs 4 to 5 lakh rupees and is very difficult for poor patient to afford. As the patient was very poor and couldn’t afford this high end surgery at private hospital, he came to GMC Udhampur for knee replacement.
His total knee replacement was done in GMC Udhampur under Ayushman Bharat scheme (free of cost) by Dr Balvinder Singh, Consultant Orthopaedics (trained in joint replacement from Germany) and his team comprising of Dr Surender, Dr Manmeet, Dr Aman Koul and anesthetist Dr Vandana and Dr Nikita Singh.
The surgery was done in supervision and active support of Principal GMC Udhampur Dr Mritunjay and Medical Superintendent Dr BL Choudhary.
Dr Balvinder Singh said, “The knee joint connects your thigh bone (femur) to your shin bone (tibia). It helps you stand, move and keep your balance. Your knees contain cartilage, meniscus, and ligaments, including your LCL, MCL, ACL and PCL. Injury to any of these structures can cause knee pain and some time instability. Cartilage damage can cause osteoarthritis. Usually cartilage damage is age related. Severe osteoarthritis is one of reason for knee replacement”.
