It is heartening to learn that Kishanganga Hydropower Project in Gurez area of Bandipur district over river Kishanganga in Kashmir valley has been fully completed. The work on this project had started in the year 2009 at a (revised) cost of Rs. 5784 crore. It has a capacity of generation of power of 330 MWs. It has achieved its rated full load successfully last month end, as per National Hydro-electric Power Corporation (NHPC).The Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate it formally in May during his visit to the State.
Kishanganga River starts from Gurez area of Bandipur Kashmir and then merges with River Jehlum near Muzaffarabad in the PoK. All the three units of this project stand commissioned. The project envisions diversion of water of Kishanganga River to underground power house to generate 1713 million units per annum. The project is covered under the Indus Water Treaty signed between India and Pakistan. Among other States to be benefited by the project, 12 percent power generated by the project shall be provided to the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan, as usual intolerant towards continued economic development of India had raised objections over Kishanganga project which were turned down by the Government of India.
