With an aim to give boost to sports in Jammu and Kashmir, Union Sports Ministry has sanctioned grant- in – aid amounting to Rs. 14.30 crore for holding games at Block level, under the Prime Minister’s Khelo India Scheme. This amount was to be spent on providing soft support in terms of coaches, equipment, consumables, technical support and organizing competitions etc.
The provisions of this scheme is that a District Level Committee will be monitoring and implementing these games which shall be chaired by Deputy Commissioner, the other members on the committee are the Superintendent of Police and district representative of J&K State Sports Council. Part of the amount sanctioned would also be utilized on boarding, lodging and travelling facilities for the participants.
It is pertinent to mention that the sanction of the grant in aid is in response to and as a result of the recent visit to the State by the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and his attending a mega sporting function held at Bakshi Stadium Srinagar where large number of young sports lovers participated.
The games which are part of the largest sports carnival under the “Prime Minister’s Khelo India Games” are Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Cycling, Football, Hockey, Judo, Kabbadi, Kho Kho, Swimming, Weight lifting, Wrestling etc. It is hoped that sports activities shall get a boost in the State with this initiative by the Union Government.
