JAMMU, Sept 17: Romesh Khajuria, Chairman, Wool & Woollens Export Promotion Council (WWEPC) Ministry of Textiles, Government of India led a delegation of Indian manufactures, WWEPC members to Milan, Italy to participate in Indian Pavilion.
More than 140 exporters from India are participating in Homi Fashion and Jewels international event in Milan. The participation serves as a vital platform for the SME sector to tap the vast opportunities of export to this region and the adjoining European market. The Indian Pavilion inaugurated by Raj Kamal, Consul, Consulate General of India, Milan in presence of Romesh Khajuria, Chairman, WWEPC, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
Raj Kamal along with Khajuria went around the booths and met the exporters from India and liked the quality of products as displayed.
He expressed his optimism that this participation will certainly go a long way in boosting Indian exports to this region. Romesh Khajuria, while speaking with the press here told that Europe’s apparel import market was valued at US$ 155 billion approximately. Italy imports textile and apparel worth US$ 30.70 billion. China is the largest supplier to Italy with 31% share in its imports and the top 5 exporters include China, France, Germany, Turkey and Spain which account for approximately 53% of Italy’s imports. India is the tenth largest supplier of textile and apparel to Italy.
Khajuria further said that India’s export of textile products to Italy reached US$ 860 million during 2022-23 surpassing the previous year’s export of US$ 839 million and registering a growth of 2%. However export of woollen products demonstrated remarkable growth surging 61% during the same period with exports totalling US$57 million in 2022-23 compared to US$ 35 million in 2021-22. Khajuria also informed that popular leader Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India places significant emphasis on our products in export market and believes that every Indian product should have a global presence, thereby encouraging manufacturers whether micro, small or medium sized to venture in to the export sector.
