JAMMU, Mar 12: In order to take stock of the situation and normalising the services, due to unprecedented snowfall and incessant rains R.K.Kaul CGMT, BSNL, Jammu and Kashmir circle, called a high level meeting of senior officers of BSNL at Jammu and also interacted with senior officers of BSNL in Kashmir Valley through video conferencing.
Nearly 30 % of Mobile towers in Kashmir Valley and hilly reaches of Jammu region are affected. Major operational issues of availability of Power supply , transportation of Diesel for DG Sets and restoration of secondary optical fibre connectivity was discussed. In the meeting strategy to restore other major transmission systems, mobile towers and exchanges and also reinforce connectivity to Kashmir Valley through minimum Satellite link between Srinagar and Jammu was also discussed to avoid this type of disruption in future.
Notwithstanding such hostile weather, the BSNL staff responsible for maintenance of telecom services are putting in their best efforts to restore the affected routes and mobile towers in the least possible time.
The meeting said although the BSNL staff is trying its best to normalise the services, considering the enormity of work and weather conditions, Mr Kaul however issued directives to his officers to normalise the telecom services in all areas within two days.
The meeting was informed that unprecedented heavy snowfall and incessant rainfall in the area played havoc with the telecommunication services in the State particularly in Kashmir Valley and hilly areas of Jammu region. Many important transmission routes in the State were adversely affected causing disruption in the telecom services. Due to heavy snowfall and lightening the transmission systems carrying long distance traffic were affected.
According to a BSNL handout the Optical Fibre Cable between Ramban and Batote which was reported faulty at 10:56 p.m. yesterday was restored 08:35 a.m. in the morning. Even Microwave connectivity between Udhampur-Srinagar got disrupted due to lightning at 9 pm yesterday and could be restored at 7.30 pm in the morning. This resulted in total disruption in connectivity between Kashmir valley and outside world between 10.56 p.m. of 11-3-2014 and 7.30 a.m. of 12-3-2014.
