Nestled in the lap of mountains and situated on the National Highway, the previously small wayside locality of Katra has gradually emerged to become a promising town of much significance owing to the arrival and departure of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine atop the Trikuta Hills. Influx of lakhs of pilgrims needs adequate infrastructure to meet their requirements. Katra does not have physical space enough to grow and develop as it would. Being a shrine related town, the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has the obligation to look to its sanitation, cleanliness, civic and transport facilities etc. It is in this background that the Shrine Board, meeting under the chairmanship of the Governor, who is also the chairman of the Board, has discussed the question of providing sanitation facilities to the town which would include drainage, water supply, parking, power supply, and other important civic facilities. In its recent meeting the Shrine Board has accepted that it has a role in giving a face-lift to the town so as to make pilgrimage to the holy shrine not only comfortable but also health-wise secure. The Governor has instructed the Board functionaries to take stock of things and find out what are the sanitary deficiency in the town that need to be streamlined. We are hopeful that the Board will make valuable contribution to the cleanliness, sanitation and beautification of the town of Katra, which now stands connected with the rest of the country through a railway line. The Board has already approved project of plantation on the hills and land has been identified for garbage disposal project. It is highly appreciable that the Shrine Board is willing to take full interest in the developmental activities and raising necessary infrastructure in the town.
