Kashmir, Ladakh freeze despite slight improvement in night temperature

Srinagar, Dec 31: There is slight improvement in the night temperature but it is still settled below freezing point across the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region on Friday, official sources said.
The Meteorological Centre Srinagar predicts a dry forecast till January 3 followed by a wet spell from January 4-6 with widespread snow and rain of moderate intensity in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The minimum temperature in Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K, settled at minus 3.0 degree Celsius against the minus 4.0 degree Celsius recorded the previous night and was minus 0.9 degree below normal for this time of the year.
The minimum temperature at the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg was recorded at minus 9.0 degree Celsius against the minus 9.6 degree Celsius on the previous night.
Qazigund, on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, had a low of minus 3.0 degree Celsius against minus 4.2 degree Celsius on the previous night, he said.
Pahalgam, the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir, recorded a low temperature of minus 6.6 degree Celsius against minus 8.9 degree Celsius a day ago, he said.
Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 3.3 degree Celsius against 3.6 degree Celsius recorded on Thursday.
The frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.6 degree Celsius against the minus 4.4 degree Celsius on the previous night, the MeT office said.
Leh in the Union Territory of Ladakh had a low temperature of minus 15.0 degree Celsius against the minus 16.0 degree Celsius a day ago while the temperature recorded at automatic Kargil station was at minus 13.8 degree Celsius against 14.2 degree Celsius from the previous day. Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, recorded a low temperature of minus 19.8 degree Celsius against the 21.9 degree Celsius on the previous night. (Agencies)
