SRINAGAR:Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying essentials for the Kashmir valley left Jammu this morning as the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was put through for one-way traffic after vehicles stranded were cleared last night.
However, no vehicle was allowed from Srinagar to Jammu as only one-way traffic will continue to ply on the highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, till further
orders, a traffic police official told UNI here. He said traffic on the highway was stopped following landslides and shooting stones, triggered by heavy rains, at several places on the other side of the Jawahar tunnel yesterday morning.
However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway immediately put into service sophiticated machines and men and cleared the landslides.
But more than 800 vehicles, which were stopped at Lower Monda and other places on this side of the tunnel, were later allowed to move towards Jammu in the afternoon yesterday.
He said no fresh vehicle was allowed from Srinagar or Jammu to avoid any traffic jam or accident. There were fresh landslides and portion of road was also damaged at Patnitop due to heavy rains. However, BRO immediately removed all the debries and allowed one-way traffic.
He said trucks loaded with essentials and passenger vehicles left Jammu for Kashmir this morning though the sky was cloudy.
Meanwhile, the Zojila pass, connecting the Ladakh region with the Kashmir valley remained closed since December last year due to accumulation of several feet of snow. The Mughal road, linking the south Kashmir with Jammu region also remained closed due to snow. (AGENCIES)
