Kashmir highway through, traffic from Srinagar to Jammu

SRINAGAR : The 300-km-long national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was thrown open with vehicles plying from Srinagar to Jammu  today.
All the vehicles, stranded since yesterday after the highway was closed due to landslides and shooting stones at Penthal, were cleared till late in the night, official sources said here today.
They said traffic will ply from Srinagar to Jammu and no up convoy will be allowed today as only one-way traffic will continue on the highway till further orders.
Traffic was suspended on the highway yesterday morning following landslides and shooting stones at Penthal and other places. However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) , responsible for the maintenance of the highway, pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to clear the landslides. It took more than ten hours to again put through.
Vehicles, who had left Jammu early in the morning yesterday were later allowed to proceed towards Kashmir, they said. Hundrds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, left different parts of the Kashmir valley, including Srinagar for Jammu this morning. (AGENCIES)
