Kashmir highway through despite rain

SRINAGAR:  Despite rain during the night, the national highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through for traffic though heavy vehicles will ply from one side only.

The light vehicles will ply from both sides, a traffic police official said. However, heavy vehicles will ply from Jammu to Srinagar today, he said adding that no heavy vehicle will be allowed from the opposite direction.

He said the highway was through despite rain due to which there were some shooting stone incidents.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, have put up their machines and men in place to clear the landslide or shooting stones.

Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying Amarnath pilgrims, tourists and local passengers besides trucks loaded with essentials, left Jammu for Kashmir valley this morning.

Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Leh national highway, linking Ladakh region with Kashmir was also through for traffic.

Similarly, historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, was also through for traffic. The road is seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu national highway. (AGENCIES)
