SRINAGAR: The 270-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, connecting Kashmir with rest of the country, was reopened on Wednesday after remaining closed for few morning hours due to fresh landslides and shooting stones, triggered by rain.
However, only essential commodity vehicles were allowed to ply on the highway.
”The 270-km-long highway was reopened for essential commodity vehicles after clearing for landslides,” a traffic police official said.
He said traffic on the highway was suspended this morning due to fresh landslides at Panthal and Cafeteria mode, triggered by heavy overnight rain.
However, he said the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the road.
He said after getting green signal from traffic and NHAI officials, traffic was resumed. Only essential commodities vehicles are allowed to ply on Srinagar-Jammu highway following ban on passenger vehicles to curtail spread of Coronavirus. But, the authorities have allowed State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) vehicles to ferry stranded travelers between Jammu and Srinagar. (AGENCIES)
