SRINAGAR: Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, today left Jammu for Srinagar as the highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was put through for one-way traffic only. However, no vehicle was allowed from the Kashmir valley, a traffic police spokesperson told. He said the highway was put through for one-way traffic yesterday in the afternoon after remaining closed since March 2, barring on March 7 when vehicles were allowed from Jammu to Srinagar.
Vehicles, mostly empty trucks and oil tankers, which were stranded on this side of the Jawahar tunnel for the past more than a week, were allowed to move towards Jammu after the landslides and snow at different places were removed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway.
As the weather and road condition remained stable, traffic was allowed from Jammu to Srinagar this morning. Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying essentials and passengers, left Jammu this morning.
The spokesperson said only one-way traffic will be allowed on the highway till further orders.
The highway was closed on March 2 due to landslides and snow. However, on March 7, the highway was opened for one-way traffic and closed again on March 8.
The National Highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through for one-way traffic and vehicles were allowed from Jammu to Srinagar today. (AGENCIES)
