CHENNAI : As expected, there were no changes in the DMK hierarchy in Tamil Nadu as M Karunanidhi was re-elected party president for a record 11th time at the DMK’s general council meeting held here today. K Anbazhagan and M K Stalin were also re-elected as general secretary and treasurer respectively. Mr Karunanidhi’s poetess daughter and Rajya Sabha member K Kanimaghi was elected as the new Women’s Wing Secretary. This was for the first time that she has been given a party post.
All of them were elected unanimously. Power struggle in the first family of the DMK virtually came out in the open in the run-up to today’s general council, with Mr Stalin, aspiring for the post of general secretary, threatening to quit the party and from the post of treasurer, apparently annoyed over the DMK high command rejecting his supporters’ demand.
After hectic confabulations, Mr Stalin dismissed the resignation reports as rumours and asserted that he was not aspiring for any higher posts in the party. He described the reports as ‘rumours, baseless and a mere speculation’.
‘Somebody with vested interests has done this mischievous act to create confusion in the party. I not only strongly condemn it, but also deny it totally,’ he said and categorically stated that he was contesting only for the post of Treasurer.
And keeping in line with his announcement, Mr Stalin was re-elected as Treasurer in the meeting today. At the General Council, Mr Karunanidhi announced that senior leader Duraimurgan was elected as the DMK’s Principal Secretary, a newly created post.
He said Ms Sargunapandian, V P Duraisamy, I Periasamy and Ms Subbulakshmi Jegadeesan were elected as Deputy General Secretaries.
Rajya Sabha member Tiruchy Siva and former Union Minister A Raja, who was cited as an accused in the 2G spectrum scam, were appointed at Propoganda Secretaries of the party, while Pughazhendi and Singara Rathinasababapthy were appointed as Student’s Wing and Labour Wing Secretaries repsectively. After the elections, senior party leaders and functionaries greeted the President, General Secretary and the Treasurer.
