Kargil EC meets Secy DARE, demands lifting of ban on export of fresh fruits

KARGIL, Jan 2: Mohd Ali Chandan, Executive Councilor (EC) Agriculture, LAHDC Kargil met with Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) & Director General Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in his office chamber at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi and discussed various issues for upliftment of Agriculture and Horticulture Sector in Kargil district.
He requested for lifting the ban to export fruits from Ladakh as in the erstwhile State of J&K there was ban to export fresh fruits from Ladakh to rest of the country. He said the ban on export not only limits area expansion under temperate fruits but also make them weaker economically, as at present district Kargil is leading in production of Apricot with 9033 MT annually from about 16 sq kms cultivated area.
Chandan said that the District has immense potential of production of export quality temperate fruits and exports them to the national and even on international markets. He also requested for establishment of “National Research Centre” and “Gamma Radiation Centre” in Kargil to promote the Agriculture and Horticulture items in terms of drying, packaging and value addition of products.
The Executive Councilor also requested for sanction of special package of funds to promote Agriculture & Horticulture Sector in the district, as at present Krishi Vigyan Kendra SKUAST Kargil is playing a key role with regard to Research, Training and Exposures to the farmers by adopting latest techniques, for which special package is required for shaping of Prime Minister’s dream of doubling farmers’ income.
Secretary DARE & Director General (ICAR) Government of India assured the Executive Councilor that all possible help from GoI will be given to uplift the Agriculture Sector of the district. He further said that the demands will be fulfilled in due course of time.
