JAMMU, Aug 29: Former Sadar-e-Riyasat and scion of erstwhile Royal Dogra family, Dr Karan Singh has appealed Governor Satya Pal Malik to declare September 23 as public holiday in the State on account of birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh.
Justifying the demand in this regard, Dr Karan Singh, in a letter written to the new Governor, said that if Sheikh Abdullah’s birthday is a gazetted holiday in the State, the birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh, who ruled the State for 22 years and signed the Instrument of Accession to India, should also be declared as a gazetted holiday.
Seeking urgent attention of the new Governor towards this demand from people of Jammu, which has been growing over the last three or four years, Dr Karan Singh said that it would be an important gesture of goodwill, if under Governor’s Rule, Maharaja Hari Singh’s birthday is also declared to be gazetted holiday in the State.
Being well aware of the delicate and complex nature of the problems facing Jammu and Kashmir because of his 18-year experience as Regent, Sadar-e-Riyasat and Governor of the State, Dr Karan Singh further said that he was looking forward to meet with Satya Pal Malik.
