SRINAGAR, Apr 27: The Government’s recent move to evacuate stranded students from different States of the county has stirred hope among the Kashmiri students in Bangladesh who also demanded their immediate evacuation.
Over 400 Kashmiri students studying Medicine in different colleges of Bangladesh got stranded after the Government ordered a nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of Coronavirus pandemic in the country. Subsequently, the Government suspended all international and domestic flights, besides sealing borders and entry points as a preventive measure against the disease.
While some of the students who managed to leave Bangladesh were able to reach their homes, other students could not leave due to restriction on the movement. The situation, however, has taken a toll on the psyche of the students who feel depressed and spend sleepless nights for being away from home.
Meelad, a student told Excelsior that there are only 8-Indian students left in the hostel and rest of the foreign students have been evacuated by their Governments. “Yesterday Sri Lankan students were evacuated by their Government. Before that students from Bhopal were evacuated. Nobody is talking about us. Our Government is sleeping over the issues,” he said.
The student said that the fear of contracting virus keeps him awake. “I stay with the students who deal with the patients of COVID 19 which increases my risk of getting the infection. They eat in the same canteen and stay in the same hostel. I am scared to venture out of my room,” he said.
The students said that they have been demanding evacuation for the last one month but no one seems to be listening. “When Governments of other countries can take their students home what is stopping our Government,” Hilal Ahmad, another student said, adding they are ready to follow all the guidelines regarding the quarantine period.
The students said that the Government of Bangladesh is mulling to close all the educational institutes till September if the situation persists like this. “What will we do till September here. We are really worried. We are scared to visit the markets and remain in our hostel rooms. We want the Government to look into the matter,” Umar, a student of MH Samorita Hospital and Medical College student told Excelsior.
These students study in different Medical Colleges of Bangladesh including East-West Medical College, Dhaka University, Bangladesh Medical College, and Camilla Medical College.
