Justice Permod Kohli conferred honoris causa

JAMMU, Apr 23: Justice Permod Kohli,  former Judge of J&K  High Court and former Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court, presently Chairman of Central Administrative Tribunal,  has been conferred a degree of doctorate (honoris causa) D Litt by Maharishi Dayanand University Rohtak,  in its 16th Convocation,  held today at the university.
The degree was conferred and delivered by Prof  Kaptan Singh Solanki, Governor of Haryana and Chancellor of the university.
After  former Chief Justices of India,  A S Anand and  T S Thakur,  Justice Kohli is the third judge from the State of J&K who has been conferred with this degree
Born in Rajouri, Justice Kohli did his  graduation from GGM Science College, Jammu and then  secured degree of Law from Jammu University in the year 1972. He joined Bar at Jammu and was appointed as Additional Advocate General of the State during Governor’s Rule in the year 1990 and took over as the Advocate General of the State in December 1990. He was designated as Senior Advocate in February 1991 and appeared on Constitutional, Service, Taxation, Commercial and Civil matters. He remained Legal Advisor to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Jammu. He was engaged as Special Counsel on behalf of the State of Jammu and Kashmir to approve the ban imposed upon the Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front and five  other militant organizations. He was in the hit list of JKLF.
He was also engaged as  the Counsel before the State Delimitation Commission for delimitation of the Assembly Constituencies in the State in the year 1991-92. He was appointed Additional Judge of the High Court of J&K on 07-01-2003 and as Permanent Judge on 03-01-2005.
Justice Permod Kohli opted for his transfer from State of J&K on his son joining the legal profession in the State of J&K on moral and ethical grounds in 2003 itself. At that time, perhaps he was the first Judge in the country who opted for transfer on this ground.   On his request, he was transferred to Jharkhand High Court. Later, he was transferred to Punjab and Haryana High Court. He was elevated as Chief Justice of High Court of Sikkim and relinquished the office on 28.02.2013.
Justice Kohli was appointed as Chairman of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) comprising of 17 regular benches and 21 Circuit Benches all over India in consultation with the Chief Justice of India on 26th March, 2016 and took charge on 05th April, 2016.
