JAMMU, Mar 4: Junior doctors called off their strike this evening following an assurance from Health Minister, Lal Singh to take concrete action on their demands like providing security on hospital premises.
“Our demands have been accepted and we are calling off the strike,’’ Dr Neeraj Sharma, president, Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA), Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Associated hospitals, said after a meeting with Health Minister and hospital administration, here this evening.
He disclosed that Minister has assured them of increasing the security in premises of GMCH and Associated hospitals within a day or two so that incidents of assault on doctors by attendants may not occur in future while on the demand of making an assault on doctors and other hospital staff on duty a non-bailable offence, he assured to initiate a process to make such a law soon.
“The Minister also assured us of timely release of salary and making working conditions better in the hospital and directed concerned SHO to investigate and bring out the truth in the FIR registered against doctors by an attendant”, he added.
The strike of junior doctors came to an end following a series of meetings of Health Minister with representatives of agitating Junior doctors including Dr Neeraj Shrama, Dr Vinod Katil, Dr Romil Sharma and Wasim Chouhan and hospital administration including principal, GMCH, Dr Ghansham Dev, Medical Superintendents of GMCH and Associated hospitals, Director Health, BS Pathania, Mission Director, NRHM, Dr Yash Pal Sharma.
Earlier, late night after a meeting took place between Health Minister and RDA representatives and the doctors were assured of fulfilling their demands, some doctors resumed their duties while others remained off duty while today morning all the doctors again suspended work and demanded written assurance.
The junior doctors under the aegis of RDA went on a strike in GMCH and associated hospitals on Monday evening after GMCH administration failed to fulfill their demands.
The doctors were demanding that at least 45 police personnel (15 in each shift) in GMC and about 25-30 police personnel (10 in each shift) in SMGS hospital be deployed to strengthen the security of doctors and hospital. They were also demanding closure report of the fabricated FIR registered against innocent doctors by an attendant and making assault on doctors and hospital staff on duty a non-bailable offence.
When contacted, Principal GMCH also confirmed that junior doctors has called off their strike on assurances of Health Minister and resumed their duties this evening.
The advocates called off their strike in all the courts including High Court after Resident Doctors Association (RDA) tendered apology.
President, Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association MK Bhardwaj said that the Residents Doctors Association (RDA) tendered apology on their Act and after that JKHCBA called-off their strike. The work has been resumed in all the courts, he added.
