JAMMU, Mar 22: A cheque of an amount of Rs. 8,36,925 for flood relief was handed over here today to Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Development of Northeastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances,Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh by a delegation of Jammu University Teachers Association (JUTA).
The delegation was led by Prof. Dilip Singh Jamwal, President JUTA and comprised among others, Dr. Virender Kundal, General Secretary, Dr. Vivek Sharma, Joint Secretary,  Dr. Sandeep Arya, Treasurer, Professor Prakash Anthral and Professor Avtar Jasrotia, who disclosed that the amount had been collected through contribution of one month salary by each of the teaching faculty members of the University of Jammu as a gesture of help to the needy through Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.
Appreciating the gesture, Dr. Jitendra Singh said, even though the Central Government is committed to provide all possible financial as well as logistic help to the State Government for its development as well as rehabilitation of the victims of floods and other natural calamities, the matter of fact is that no social or national mission can fulfill its avowed objective without the active participation and contribution of the representatives of civil society and literate class.
Members of the teaching faculty, particularly those from the University of Jammu, Dr. Jitendra Singh said, have always been in the forefront in contributing and offering their assistance whenever the society was faced with an adverse situation. He said, academicians and teachers are held as role models by the society and therefore, the contributions made by them carry a value which is many times more than the real value of the money donated.
Dr. Jitendra Singh thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the generous help and concern for the victims of September floods in Jammu & Kashmir and added, from his own side on personal behalf, he had undertaken a humble initiative of adopting the flood-ravaged village of Saddal in district Udhampur to develop it as a “smart village” within one and a half year which would be in addition to three other villages of Sangwali Kathua, Humbal Doda and Bhattal Kishtwar which he had adopted as an MP under the “Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana”.
