JAMMU, Sept 8: School of Biotechnology in collaboration with Department of Botany, University of Jammu, organized a special guest lecture by eminent German Scientist, Prof Appemroth, who is considered to be a world authority on duckweeds – the plants growing extensively in ponds.
In his highly informative lecture, Prof Appenroth enlightened the faculty, research students and the masters students about the alternative use of the tropical weed as a bioremediation agent for water purification, raw material for biofuel production, animal food and also as food supplement for the humans as it is rich in protein and starch. In his opinion, in a country like India where hunger is a burning problem, this weed can be solution to this problem, however a beginning needs to be made.
The lecture session was presided over by Professor Manoj K Dhar, Vice Chancellor JU, enumerated enormous contribution of Prof Appenroth in duckweed research. He suggested that some efforts be made in the University to popularize the use of duckweeds as these are rich in proteins and starch.
Earlier, the guest speaker was introduced by Prof Namrata Sharma, Head, Department of Botany and Prof Jyoti Vakhlu, Director School of Biotechnology presented welcome address.
