JAMMU, Aug 17: The Law School, University of Jammu, organized a highly informative panel discussion titled “Critical Appraisal of Cyber Laws: A Way Ahead.”
The discussion featured a distinguished panel of experts from various fields including Justice Rajesh Tandon (Retd), former Chairperson of the Cyber Appellate Tribunal, Government of India; Mohd Yaseen Kichloo, SSP, Cyber Investigation Centre for Excellence, J&K and Aditya Kaul, Advocate, Supreme Court of India.
Dr Palvi Mathavan Puri, Assistant Professor at The Law School, commenced the session and the discussion encompassed a comprehensive overview of the Information Technology Act, 2000, including its genesis, objectives, and the role of judicial intervention. Key topics also included the policy framework for safeguarding individuals and organizations against cyber threats, privacy and security in digital transactions, and ethical and legal standards in cyberspace.
Justice Tandon highlighted the growing significance of cyber insurance as an essential tool for organizations to protect against sophisticated digital threats.
Mohd Yaseen Kichloo underscored the critical importance of enhancing awareness about cyber laws as a fundamental step in effectively combating cybercrimes. To address the growing threat of cybercrimes, Kichloo advocated for a coordinated approach involving a broad spectrum of stakeholders viz., law enforcement agencies, technical experts and educational institutions.
Advocate Aditya Kaul highlighted the inadequacies of the IT Act, 2000 in addressing the challenges posed by emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI). He emphasized the urgent need for a revised legal framework to effectively manage the risks and challenges associated with rapid advancements in AI technologies.
Earlier, Dr Seema Rohmetra, Director of The Law School, delivered the introductory address, emphasizing the need for cyber laws to evolve in response to the dynamic nature of cyberspace. She stressed the importance of addressing online financial crimes and data protection.
The interactive session also featured a lively Q&A segment where participants posed questions on various topics. The panelists addressed these queries with insightful responses.
The proceedings were conducted by Ayushi Bral and Geetanjali, students of The Law School. Dr Nitan Sharma concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
